A TED Talk transcript generator turns any ted.com talk link into readable text. Paste the URL, press Get Transcript, and you get the full transcript, a timestamped version, and SRT and VTT subtitle files, in any language TED offers for that talk. It is free and needs no sign-in.

What Is a TED Talk Transcript?

A TED Talk transcript is the written text of everything a speaker says on stage, split into short caption-sized pieces. Each piece is called a segment and has a start time, so the text lines up with the video.

The same text can be packaged in four ways. Plain text is one block of reading material. A timestamped transcript puts the start time in square brackets before each line. SRT and WebVTT are subtitle file formats: each caption has a number (SRT) or optional cue, a start and end time, and the text. Video players and editors read these files to show captions.

TED publishes transcripts for its official talks, and many are translated by volunteers into dozens of languages. This page lets you pull any of them without scrolling through the talk page.

How to Use the TED Talk Transcript Generator

You only need a talk link and a few seconds. Follow these steps:

1. Open the talk on ted.com and copy its address. It looks like https://www.ted.com/talks/talk_slug.
2. Paste it into the TED Talk URL field, or press Paste to insert it from your clipboard.
3. Press Get Transcript. The talk title, cover image, description and a View on TED link appear above the text.
4. If the talk has more than one language, use the Transcript language menu. The text switches right away, so you do not need to press the button again.
5. Choose a tab under Transcript formats: Full Transcript, Timestamped, SRT or VTT.
6. Press Copy to put the visible text on your clipboard, Select All to highlight it, or download a TXT, SRT or VTT file.

Worked Example: From Talk Link to Study Notes

Say you paste the link to an 18-minute talk. TED talks are usually spoken at roughly 140 to 160 words per minute, so you can expect about 2,700 words. The tool shows four numbers above the text: Words (2,700), Characters, Segments, and Read Time. Read Time divides the word count by 200 and rounds, so 2,700 words shows as 14 min.

The 14 minutes tells you something useful: reading is a little faster than watching. If you need the key ideas for a class, you can skim the text in under a quarter of an hour, then jump to the parts that matter.

On the Timestamped tab, a line might read [3:05.20] And that is when I realized the data was wrong. That start time lets you find the exact spot in the video. On the SRT tab, the same line appears as caption number 41 with a time range such as 00:03:05,200 --> 00:03:08,000 followed by the text. On the VTT tab, the file starts with the word WEBVTT and uses a period instead of a comma in the times.

Switch the language menu to Spanish and the same talk reloads as Spanish text, with the same timing structure. That is handy for language learners who want to read both versions side by side.

How Do You Read and Use the Results?

Each result has one job, so choose the format that fits your next step.

Full Transcript

Use this tab when you want clean prose. It joins every segment into one block with no times. It suits quoting, summarizing, highlighting and pasting into a notes app or word processor.

Timestamped

Use this tab when you need to point back to the video. Timestamps help when you write a lesson plan ("watch from 4:10 to 6:30") or cite where a quote occurs.

SRT and VTT

Use these when you want captions. SRT works in most video editors and desktop players. WebVTT is the format web video players use. Download the file, keep it next to your video, and load it as a subtitle track.

The four counters

• Words and Characters measure length. They help you check limits before you paste text into a form or document.
• Segments is the number of caption pieces. A higher number means shorter lines.
• Read Time is a quick estimate at 200 words per minute, with a minimum of 1 minute.

A healthy result looks like a steady stream of sentences that match the talk. Applause or music cues may appear as short notes. If the text looks empty or the counters show very low numbers, read the troubleshooting section below.

Who Uses TED Transcripts, and for What?

Anyone who needs the words of a talk in text form can use this page. These are the most common situations:

• Students and teachers: pull quotes, build discussion questions, or give learners a reading version of a talk.
• Language learners: compare English text with a translation in the language menu, and read along while listening.
• Aspiring speakers: study how a strong talk opens, builds an argument and closes. Best Practices, Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Most problems come from the link, not the talk. Check these first.

Use the talk page link

The link must be a ted.com talk address with /talks/ followed by the talk name. A YouTube link to a TED talk will not work, and neither will a link to a TED-Ed lesson or a playlist page. If you see a message asking for a valid TED talk URL, copy the address again from the talk page itself.

Pick the language after the first result

The language menu appears only after the talk loads, and only when TED lists more than one language for it. If you do not see a menu, the talk is shown in a single language.

"Unable to Fetch Transcript" or "Could Not Be Retrieved"

If the talk was found but the transcript did not come back, wait a moment and press Get Transcript again. This is often temporary. A message that the talk could not be found means the link is wrong or the talk was removed, so check for typos.

"No Transcript Available for This Talk"

Some very new or unusual talks do not have a published transcript yet. Try another talk, or come back later.

Need a PDF?

The tool gives you TXT, SRT and VTT downloads, plus Copy for the visible text. For a PDF, copy the Full Transcript into a document and use your word processor's save-as-PDF option. Add the speaker's name, the talk title and the link to the original so readers can find the source.

Clean up before you publish

Spoken language is messy. Before you reuse text, remove filler words only if you are quoting loosely, and never change a quote's meaning. If you plan to republish a transcript, check TED's terms of use and credit the speaker.

Choose the right tab before downloading

The TXT button saves plain text, while SRT and VTT save subtitle files. Check which tab you need, then match the file type to your editor or player.

Limits and Accuracy Notes

The text comes from the transcript TED publishes, so it is only as good as that source. Translations are written by volunteers and may differ in style or accuracy from the English original. Segment timing follows TED's own captions, so a subtitle line may start slightly before or after the speaker finishes a phrase.

The tool works with talks on ted.com. It does not transcribe audio, so a talk without a published transcript cannot be converted here.
