Recovers ~15% of data if damaged

This free QR code generator turns a link, plain text, email, phone number, WiFi login or contact card into a scannable QR code. Choose the size, colors and error correction level, then save the PNG, copy the image or print it. You do not need an account, and it takes seconds.

What Is a QR Code and How Does It Work?

A QR code (short for Quick Response code) is a square pattern of dark and light modules that stores data a phone camera can read instantly. The scanner reads the pattern, decodes the stored text, and the phone decides what to do with it: open a link, start an email, dial a number or join a WiFi network.

A QR code does not hold a file or a web page. It holds a short string of characters, such as https://example.com/menu. The more characters you store, the more modules the code needs, so it looks denser and gets harder to scan from a distance.

What is error correction?

Error correction adds redundant data so a scanner can still read the code when part of it is dirty, scratched, folded or covered. This tool offers four levels: L recovers about 7% of the data, M about 15%, Q about 25% and H about 30%. Higher levels survive more damage but make the pattern denser.

What can you encode?

The tool supports six content types: Text, URL, Email, Phone, WiFi and vCard. Each one shows its own fields, so you never have to type special formatting by hand.

How to Use the QR Code Generator

You can create a QR code in six steps, and the form changes depending on the content type you pick.

  1. Under Content Type, click Text, URL, Email, Phone, WiFi or vCard.
  2. Fill in the fields that appear. For a URL, type the address in the URL box. For WiFi, enter the Network Name (SSID), the password, the Encryption type and tick Hidden network if needed.
  3. Drag the Image Size slider between 100 and 800 pixels (it starts at 300px).
  4. Pick an Error Correction Level: L, M, Q or H. M is selected by default.
  5. Set the Foreground Color and Background Color with the color pickers or hex boxes, or click a Color Preset: Classic, Navy, Red, Green, Purple or Inverted.
  6. Click Generate QR Code. Then use Save As Image, Print or Copy Image, or choose Generate New to start over.

If you leave the main field empty, the form will not submit. If you type a web address without a prefix, the URL type adds https:// for you.

Worked Example: A WiFi QR Code for a Cafe

Suppose a cafe wants guests to join its WiFi without typing a password. The owner picks WiFi and enters CafeGuest as the Network Name, a password such as latte2024, and leaves Encryption on WPA/WPA2. The owner sets the size to 400px, keeps error correction on M and clicks Generate QR Code.

The result page shows the code plus three details: Size, EC Level and Data. The Data line reports the number of UTF-8 bytes stored, which tells you how much content the code carries. Guests who scan it see a prompt to join CafeGuest, with no typing.

The size shown may be slightly smaller than the slider value. The image is built from whole-pixel modules, so a request for 300px can come out a few pixels smaller. That is normal, and the panel always shows the real pixel size of the file you save.

Next, the owner clicks Print for a counter sign. Before printing 50 copies, the owner scans the code from a phone and checks it joins the right network. A two-minute test saves a wasted print run.

How to Read Your Result and Choose the Right Settings

A good QR code scans on the first try from a normal reading distance, so every setting should serve that goal. Use the guide below to pick values that fit your situation.

Error levelRecoversBest for
L - LowAbout 7%Clean screens, long text
M - MediumAbout 15%Everyday web and print use
Q - QuartileAbout 25%Flyers, packaging, handling
H - HighAbout 30%Outdoor signs, rough surfaces

Size

Bigger is easier to scan, but only up to a point. A widely used rule of thumb is a scanning distance of about ten times the code width, so a 2 cm code scans from roughly 20 cm, and a poster scanned from 2 meters needs a code around 20 cm wide. For print, generate the code at a larger pixel size than you think you need, because enlarging a small PNG makes the edges blurry.

Colors

Scanners need strong contrast between the modules and the background. Dark modules on a light background are the safest choice, which is why Classic and Navy work reliably. Red, Green and Purple on white usually scan well too, but pale or low-contrast pairs, such as yellow on white, often fail.

The Inverted preset puts light modules on a dark background. Many modern phone cameras read it, but some older scanner apps do not. Test it on more than one phone before you commit.

Data size

If the Data line shows a large byte count and the pattern looks crowded, shorten the content. For websites, point the code at a short, clean address rather than a link packed with tracking parameters. Lower error correction also makes a code less dense.

Who Uses a QR Code Maker and for What?

Anyone who wants to move a person from the physical world to a phone screen quickly can use this tool. These situations come up often:

  • Restaurants and shops: link a table card to a menu page or a review page.
  • Business cards: use the vCard type with a name, phone, email, organization and website so the contact saves in one tap.
  • Homes and offices: print a WiFi code for guests, and tick Hidden network if your SSID is not broadcast.
  • Events: use the Email type with a pre-filled subject and body for RSVPs or feedback.
  • Marketers: send print readers to a landing page. If your destination address is long, create a short version with a bulk URL shortener first, which also produces a cleaner, easier-to-scan code.
  • Phone shortcuts: use the Phone type for a support line that dials when scanned.

Square QR codes and linear barcodes solve different problems. If you need to label products for retail scanners, a barcode generator is the better fit.

Best Practices and Common Mistakes

Most scanning failures come from a handful of avoidable mistakes, and each has a simple fix.

  • Low contrast: choose a dark foreground and a light background, and never swap them accidentally.
  • Too small in print: keep printed codes at least about 2 cm wide, and larger when people scan from farther away.
  • No margin: leave a clear blank border around the code when you place it in a design. Text or images touching the edge can stop it scanning.
  • Skipping the test: scan the finished code with at least one iPhone and one Android phone before publishing.
  • Typos in the destination: read the URL, email address or WiFi password twice. A QR code faithfully stores whatever you type, mistakes included.
  • Overstuffed content: long paragraphs create dense codes. Link to a page instead of storing the whole message.
  • Wrong encryption setting: if guests cannot join, check that the Encryption option matches your router. Most home networks use WPA/WPA2, and open networks need None (Open) with an empty password.

If you see an error

If the tool says the input could not be encoded, shorten your text or lower the error correction level, then try again. The form will reappear so you can edit your entries.

Limitations to Know About

This tool creates static QR codes. The content is fixed once you generate it, so you cannot edit the destination later, and the tool does not count scans. If you need scan statistics, point the code to a URL you can measure with your own analytics, such as one carrying campaign parameters. If you change a destination often, send the code to a page you control and update that page instead.

The downloaded file is a PNG image. The tool does not produce vector files, so for large print jobs, generate at the largest size available and keep the original file. You can also check any finished code with a QR code decoder to confirm it stores exactly what you intended.

The generator is part of a wider set of online calculators and utilities if you need related helpers for your project.

Choose a content type, set your size and colors, and click Generate QR Code on this page. You will have a ready-to-save PNG in seconds, and a quick phone scan will confirm it works before you share it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate a QR code for free?
Pick a content type, fill in the fields, and click Generate QR Code. The tool is free and needs no sign-in. You can then save the PNG, copy the image or print it straight from the result page.
How to generate a QR code for a website?
Choose the URL content type, type your web address, and click Generate QR Code. If you leave off the prefix, https:// is added automatically. Scan the finished code with your phone to confirm it opens the right page.
What can I put in a QR code with this tool?
You can encode plain text, a URL, an email with optional subject and body, a phone number, WiFi login details, or a vCard contact with name, phone, email, organization and website.
What is error correction in a QR code?
Error correction lets a scanner read a code even when part of it is damaged or covered. This tool offers L (about 7%), M (about 15%), Q (about 25%) and H (about 30%). Higher levels survive more damage but produce a denser pattern.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Weak contrast, a tiny print size or too much content are the usual causes. Use a dark foreground on a light background, print at least about 2 cm wide, shorten the text, and test on two phones before sharing.
Can I track scans or edit the QR code later?
No. This tool makes static codes whose content is fixed and whose scans are not counted. To measure scans, point the code at a URL you track with your own analytics, and update that page instead of the code.
