Backlink Value Estimator

Compare a backlink using authority, traffic and link details that you provide.

Method: this is a heuristic calculator. It does not visit the linking domain, verify its authority or traffic, or predict rankings. The domain is a reference label only.

This backlink value calculator gives any link a 0 to 100 score and a letter grade based on the details you enter: domain authority, monthly traffic, link type, link attribute, topical relevance and outbound links on the page. It helps link builders and SEOs compare prospects and decide which links deserve outreach time first.

What Is Backlink Value?

Backlink value is an estimate of how much a link from another page helps your site. It depends on the strength of the linking site, the audience it reaches, where the link sits and how it is tagged. Google does not publish how it weighs links, so every estimate, including this one, is a proxy and not a measurement.

Google's Search Central documentation explains that links help Google discover pages and understand what they are about, and that the rel values nofollow, ugc and sponsored tell Google how to treat a link. The Backlink Value Estimator turns those ideas into a transparent score out of 100.

Each input adds points, and the outbound link count then scales the total down:

  • Authority: up to 40 points. Your domain authority figure is multiplied by 0.4 and rounded, so a DA of 45 earns 18 points.
  • Traffic: up to 20 points. Every tenfold jump in monthly visits adds 4 points: 10 visits is 4 points, 1,000 is 12, and 100,000 or more reaches the 20-point cap.
  • Link type: Editorial 15, Sidebar / Footer 7, Directory / Profile 5, Comment / Forum 3.
  • Link attribute: DoFollow 15, NoFollow 5, UGC 3, Sponsored 2.
  • Topical relevance: High 10, Medium 5, Low 2.
  • Outbound links: the subtotal is divided by the square root of the number of outbound links on the page.

How to Use the Backlink Value Estimator

You fill in seven fields and press one button. Every field has a starting value, so you only change what you know about the link.

  1. Optionally type the site in Linking Domain URL (optional reference), for example https://example.com. It is only a label shown in your result and does not change the score.
  2. Enter Estimated Domain Authority (0-100). The starting value is 20.
  3. Enter Monthly Traffic (approx.) as a whole number. The starting value is 1,000.
  4. Pick a Link Type: Editorial (in-content), Sidebar / Footer, Comment / Forum or Directory / Profile.
  5. Pick a Link Attribute (DoFollow, NoFollow, UGC or Sponsored) and a Topical Relevance level (High, Medium or Low).
  6. Enter the Number of Outbound Links on Page. It must be at least 1, and the starting value is 10.
  7. Click Estimate Backlink Value to see your grade, score and a point-by-point breakdown.

Worked Example: Scoring a Guest Post Opportunity

Say you are weighing a guest post on a marketing blog. You enter DA 45, 50,000 monthly visits, Editorial (in-content), DoFollow, High (same niche) and 5 outbound links.

The points are: authority 18, traffic 19 (4 times the base-10 log of 50,000 is about 18.8, rounded), placement 15, attribute 15 and relevance 10. The subtotal is 77. Divide by the square root of 5 (about 2.24) and you get 34.4, which rounds to 34 out of 100: grade D, Below Average.

That looks harsh for a strong site, and it is deliberate. The outbound link count has a big effect, so compare scenarios side by side:

ScenarioSubtotalFinal score
Example above, 5 outbound links7734 (D)
Same link, 1 outbound link7777 (A)
Same site, NoFollow comment, low relevance, 5 outbound links4721 (D)

The takeaway: the guest post beats the comment link by 13 points, and a page that links out less would be worth far more on paper. Use the numbers to rank options, not to chase an A+.

How Do You Read and Act on the Score?

The score maps to six grades, and each one suggests a next step.

  • 80+ (A+, Exceptional): rare, because it needs a strong site, an editorial link and very few outbound links. Prioritize it.
  • 65 to 79 (A, Excellent): worth a personalized pitch.
  • 50 to 64 (B, Good): solid targets for steady link building.
  • 35 to 49 (C, Average): acceptable if the effort is low.
  • 20 to 34 (D, Below Average): look for ways to improve the inputs, such as a page with fewer links.
  • Under 20 (F, Poor): usually not worth the effort.

The Score Breakdown shows each factor as points out of its maximum, so you can see what held the score back. If authority and traffic are strong but the total is low, the culprit is almost always outbound links or the link type. Ask for an in-content placement instead of a footer mention, or choose a page that links out less.

Who Should Use a Backlink Value Calculator?

It suits anyone who must choose between several link opportunities and needs a consistent way to compare them.

  • Link builders ranking a list of outreach prospects before sending emails.
  • Freelancers and agencies explaining to clients why an in-content link on a related site beats five directory listings.
  • Site owners reviewing links they already earned. Pull them with the backlink checker or the Moz backlink extractor, then score the most important ones.
  • Guest bloggers who found sites through the guest post opportunity finder and need to pick the best few.

Best Practices and Common Mistakes

Better inputs produce a more useful score, so spend your time there.

Use consistent data sources

Take authority and traffic from the same metrics provider for every prospect. Mixing figures from different providers makes the comparison meaningless, because each uses its own scale.

Count outbound links honestly

Count the links in the main content, plus the ones in navigation, sidebar and footer if you want a realistic picture. Entering 1 by default inflates the score and hides the dilution the tool is built to show.

Do not treat NoFollow as worthless

NoFollow, UGC and Sponsored links score lower, but they can still bring referral visitors and brand exposure. Score them anyway when the audience is right.

Fix input errors

If you see a message instead of a result, check three things: authority must be between 0 and 100, traffic must be a whole number of 0 or more, and outbound links must be a whole number of at least 1. Remove commas and decimals from traffic and outbound fields.

Judge relevance honestly

A link from a same-niche site is worth more than the same link from an unrelated one. Choose High only when the page truly covers your topic. You can check how a page already links out with the anchor text analyzer.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

This is a heuristic calculator. It does not visit the linking page, confirm its authority or traffic, or predict rankings. The domain you type is only a reference label.

The score is not a price either. People search for terms like backlink price, but this result is a relative grade, not a dollar value or a quote for buying a link. Use it to compare prospects, and use bulk domain value estimates when you want to review several domains at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a backlink value calculator work?
A backlink value calculator scores a link from the details you enter. This tool adds points for authority, traffic, link type, attribute and relevance, then divides the total by the square root of the outbound link count to give a 0 to 100 score.
What is a good backlink value score?
A score of 50 or higher (grade B, Good) is a solid target, and 65 or higher is Excellent. Scores drop quickly on pages with many outbound links, so compare prospects against each other rather than aiming only for 80.
Can this tool tell me the price of a backlink?
No. The Backlink Value Estimator returns a relative score and grade, not a dollar amount or a market price. Use the score to rank link opportunities, then decide what each one is worth to you.
Why does the number of outbound links lower my backlink score so much?
The subtotal is divided by the square root of the outbound link count, reflecting that equity is shared across links. A 77-point link scores 77 with 1 outbound link but only 34 with 5, so fewer outbound links raise the result.
Does the Backlink Value Estimator check the real authority and traffic of a domain?
No. Authority and traffic are numbers you provide, and the domain URL is only a reference label. Accuracy depends on your inputs, so use figures from one trusted metrics source for every link you compare.
Is the backlink value estimator free, and why do I get an error message?
The tool is free and needs no sign-in. An error means an input is invalid: authority must be 0 to 100, traffic a whole number of 0 or more, and outbound links a whole number of at least 1.
