Moz Backlink Extractor

Enter a URL

Use this Moz backlink checker to list external pages that link to any domain, along with each linking page's Moz Page Authority (PA) and Domain Authority (DA). Enter a website URL, choose how many links to retrieve, and get a table you can copy or export. It is free and needs no sign-in.

What Are Moz Backlinks, PA and DA?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours, and a Moz backlink report describes those links using Moz's authority scores. For every link found, this tool shows the linking domain, the exact linking page URL, the page's PA and the site's DA.

Domain Authority is a Moz score from 1 to 100 that estimates how strongly a whole domain may rank in search results. Page Authority uses the same scale for a single page. Both sit on a logarithmic scale, so moving from 20 to 30 is much easier than moving from 70 to 80.

These scores are Moz metrics, not Google ranking factors. Use them to compare link sources quickly, not as a promise of rankings.

What the report covers

The report looks at links pointing to the whole domain, not one page. It includes only links from other sites, so your own internal links are left out. Each linking page URL appears once, which means one domain can show up on several rows if several of its pages link to you.

How to Use the Moz Backlink Extractor

You can run a check in under a minute. Follow these steps:

  1. Type the site you want to check into the Website URL field, for example https://example.com. The homepage address or a bare domain works best.
  2. Open Max Backlinks to Find and pick 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250. The default is 50, which is a good first pass.
  3. Submit the form with the button below the fields. A loading message reading "Extracting backlinks from Moz..." appears while the list is built. Bigger lists take longer.
  4. Read the three summary boxes: Total Backlinks, Avg Page Authority and Avg Domain Authority.
  5. Scan the table with its columns #, Linking Domain, Linking Page, PA and DA. Click a linking page to open it in a new tab and see the link in context.
  6. Copy the plain list of linking URLs, download the data as an Excel-style file, or use Export CSV. Use the link at the bottom to start a new check.

Worked Example: Checking a Small Online Store

Say you run a store at example-shop.com and want to know who links to it. You enter that domain, set Max Backlinks to Find to 100 and submit. The numbers below are illustrative, but the logic matches what the tool does.

The summary shows 100 Total Backlinks, an Avg Page Authority of 18.4 and an Avg Domain Authority of 31.2. Those averages come from adding every row's score and dividing by 100. If the PA column adds up to 1,840, then 1,840 divided by 100 gives 18.4.

An average DA of 31.2 with an average PA of 18.4 tells you the links mostly come from moderately established sites, but the specific pages linking to you are young or lightly linked themselves. Sorting the exported file by DA then shows which three or four domains deserve a thank-you email or a follow-up pitch. Rows with DA under 20 and PA under 10 are worth a closer look in case they are low-quality directories.

How Do You Read and Act on the Results?

Start with the summary boxes, then move to the rows. The tool color-codes both scores: green for 40 and above, a blue or purple tint for 20 to 39, and gray for anything under 20.

ScoreColorWhat to do
40 or higherGreenProtect and learn from these links
20 to 39Blue or purpleHealthy mid-tier sources
Under 20GrayCheck relevance before judging

Average Domain Authority

This tells you the general strength of the sites that link to you. A higher average usually means your links come from stronger sites. Judge it against competitors, not in isolation: run the same check on two or three rivals and compare their averages at the same list size.

Average Page Authority

PA is usually lower than DA because single pages hold less authority than whole sites. A big gap, like DA 60 and PA 5, often points to a link buried on a weak page of a strong site, such as a comment or an old archive page.

Gray rows are not automatically bad

A low score often just means a new or small site. A relevant niche blog with DA 15 can send better traffic than a general site with DA 50. Open the linking page, check that the topic fits yours, and keep it if the link looks natural.

Spotting patterns

If the Linking Domain column repeats the same site dozens of times, you may have a sitewide link from a footer or sidebar. That is not always harmful, but it can make a profile look less varied than it is. To see what words those links use, run the pages through the anchor text analyzer.

Who Is This Backlink Checker For?

Anyone who needs to see who links to a site can use it. These are the most common situations:

  • Site owners: confirm that a recent PR mention, guest post or directory listing now links to you.
  • Link builders: pull a competitor's linking pages, then pitch the same publishers with a better resource.
  • Agencies: export a client's links before a quarterly review or a site migration.
  • Buyers of websites or domains: check what kind of links an expired or for-sale domain has before paying for it. The backlink value estimator is a useful companion for judging single links.
  • Content teams: find which pages attract links in your niche and plan similar articles.

Best Practices and Troubleshooting

A few habits make the results more useful and avoid common confusion.

Run the same settings every time

If you compare month to month, keep Max Backlinks to Find the same. A list of 250 will always look different from a list of 50. Export each run and keep the dates in the file name so you can see which links are new.

Check competitors, not just yourself

Your own report shows what you have. A competitor's report shows what you are missing. Look for domains that appear on their list but not yours, then pitch them with a broken link outreach template or a fresh guest article.

Combine with a total count

This tool returns a sample of up to 250 links. To see the overall number of backlinks a domain has, use the backlink checker alongside it.

Common problems and fixes

  • You see fewer rows than you selected: the domain may simply have fewer external links in Moz's index. Duplicate linking URLs are also shown once.
  • A link you built last week is missing: new links can take time to appear. Check again in a few weeks.
  • You see a message that backlinks could not be retrieved: wait a few minutes and run the check again, or try a smaller list size.
  • Nothing happens after you submit: make sure the Website URL field contains a real domain with a dot, such as example.com.
  • The domain has zero results: brand-new sites often have no links yet. Try again after you have published and promoted some content.

Handling suspicious links

If you find spammy rows, such as unrelated foreign-language pages with DA 1, do not panic. Google ignores most low-quality links on its own. Only if you see a clear pattern of paid or manipulative links should you list them in the disavow file generator.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

The report shows up to 250 links per run, so large sites will only see a sample, not a full profile. It does not show anchor text, whether a link is followed or nofollow, or the date a link was found, and it does not display a spam score. Moz's index is also not the same as Google's, so some links Google knows about may be absent and vice versa.

PA and DA are estimates. They help you sort and compare, but a link's real value depends on relevance, placement and the traffic it can send.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Moz backlink checker show for a domain?
The tool lists external pages that link to a domain, with the linking domain, linking page URL, Page Authority and Domain Authority for each one. It also shows total backlinks found plus average PA and average DA, so you can judge link quality at a glance.
How many backlinks can I extract at once?
You can extract up to 250 backlinks per run. The Max Backlinks to Find menu offers 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250, with 50 selected by default. Start small, then raise the number if you need a broader sample.
Is the Moz backlink checker free to use?
Yes, the Moz Backlink Extractor is free and you do not need to sign in. Type a website URL, choose a list size, and run the check. You can copy, download or export the results at no cost.
What do PA and DA mean in the backlink table?
PA is Moz's Page Authority for the linking page, and DA is Domain Authority for the whole linking site, both on a 1 to 100 scale. Higher numbers suggest stronger sources. Rows scoring 40 or more are shown in green, 20 to 39 in a tint, and lower scores in gray.
Can I export Moz backlink data to Excel or CSV?
Yes. After the report loads, you can download the data as an Excel-style file, use Export CSV, or copy the plain list of linking URLs. Each export includes the number, linking domain, linking page URL, PA and DA columns.
Why does the tool show fewer backlinks than I selected?
The domain may have fewer external links in Moz's index than the number you picked, and each linking page URL is listed only once. If you see a retrieval error instead, wait a few minutes and run the check again.
