What Is a Favicon?

A favicon is the small square icon that represents your website in browser tabs, bookmarks, history lists, browser toolbars and, on mobile, Google search results. The name is short for "favorite icon." The classic file is favicon.ico, an ICO container that can hold several image sizes in a single file so the browser picks the one that fits.

Modern sites need more than one file. Browsers use small PNGs, Apple devices look for a 180 x 180 touch icon, Android and progressive web apps use 192 x 192 and 512 x 512 icons listed in a web manifest, and Windows uses a 150 x 150 tile. Making all of these by hand in an image editor is slow. This tool produces the whole set from one upload.

Google's Search Central documentation says a favicon should be a square image whose side is a multiple of 48 pixels (48, 96, 144 and so on), and that the file must be crawlable. The 48 x 48 and 192 x 192 PNGs from this tool both fit that rule.

How to Use the Favicon Generator

You can create a favicon in under a minute with these steps.

  1. Under Upload Image, click the drop area or drag a file onto it. Accepted formats are PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP, SVG, ICO and TIFF, up to 2MB.
  2. Check the preview. It shows the file name, pixel dimensions and file size, so you can confirm you picked the right image.
  3. Open the Icon Size menu and choose 16, 24, 32 (Recommended), 48 or 64 pixels.
  4. Click Create Favicon. The button stays disabled until a valid file is selected.
  5. On the results screen, click Download under the ICO Favicon preview, then download each PNG you need from the PNG Formats for All Platforms section.
  6. Copy the HTML snippets and the site.webmanifest text shown under How to Install Your Favicon, then click Try New Image if you want to start over.

The Clear button resets the form if you picked the wrong file.

Worked Example: From a 512 px Logo to a Full Icon Set

Say you have a square PNG logo called logo.png, 512 x 512 pixels and about 180 KB. You upload it, leave Icon Size on 32 x 32 px (Recommended) and click Create Favicon.

The tool returns a favicon.ico labeled "32x32 (Multi-size ICO)". That file holds three images: 16 x 16, 24 x 24 and 32 x 32. You also get seven PNG files: favicon-16x16, favicon-32x32, favicon-48x48, apple-touch-icon (180 x 180), android-chrome-192x192, android-chrome-512x512 and mstile-150x150.

Had you chosen 64 x 64 instead, the ICO would contain 16, 24, 32, 48 and 64 pixel images. The file is larger, but it covers Windows desktop shortcuts and sharper high-density displays.

Your next step is to upload everything to your site's root folder, so the icon loads at yourdomain.com/favicon.ico, and paste the generated tags into the head of your pages.

Which Icon Size Should You Choose?

Choose 32 x 32 for most websites, because it covers the standard tab size and its sharper version. Larger options only add more sizes to the ICO, since each choice includes every smaller size.

FileSizeTypical use
favicon.ico16 to 64 pxBrowser tabs, bookmarks, legacy support
favicon-16x16 and 32x32 PNG16, 32 pxTabs on standard and high-density screens
favicon-48x48 PNG48 pxDesktop shortcuts, search engine guidelines
apple-touch-icon180 pxiPhone and iPad home screen
android-chrome 192 and 512192, 512 pxAndroid home screen, web app manifest
mstile-150x150150 pxWindows tiles

The PNG set is delivered with every result, so the size menu only changes what is packed inside the ICO file.

How Do You Read and Install the Results?

The results page gives you each file with a preview, a platform label (Browser, Apple, Android or Windows) and a Download button. Look at the previews before installing. A good favicon is still recognizable at 16 pixels. A poor one turns into a blurry smudge, which usually means the source had thin lines, small text or low contrast.

Then follow the installation block:

  • Upload files. Place all downloads in your website's root directory.
  • Add tags. Copy each snippet into the head section of your pages. They cover the ICO, the 32 and 16 pixel PNGs, the Apple touch icon, the manifest, the Windows tile image and a theme color.
  • Create the manifest. Save the sample JSON as site.webmanifest, then fill in the empty name and short name fields.
  • Fix paths. If you store icons in a subfolder, change each path in the tags and in the manifest to match.

The default theme color in the snippets is white (#ffffff). Replace it with your brand color. If you are unsure which color to pick, a color palette extractor can pull your brand colors straight from the logo, and a color contrast checker helps you confirm that the icon stays visible on light and dark browser themes.

Who Needs a Favicon Maker?

Anyone who publishes a site benefits from a proper icon, but a few situations come up often.

  • New site launches. Developers and freelancers can generate the full set once instead of exporting seven sizes by hand.
  • Store and blog owners. If your platform asks for a favicon upload, you can create a clean square ICO or PNG from your logo.
  • Web app builders. The 192 and 512 pixel PNGs and the manifest sample give you a starting point for a progressive web app.
  • SEO and brand teams. A recognizable icon helps your listing stand out in browser tabs and mobile search results, so it supports brand recall.
  • Redesigns and migrations. If you moved your icon to a new location, an htaccess redirect generator can help you send the old path to the new one.

You can find more utilities like this in the web developer tools and image editing and optimization collections.

Best Practices and Common Mistakes

Start with a square, simple image

Upload a square source, ideally 512 x 512 pixels or larger. A wide or tall image is resized into a square frame, so it can look stretched. Crop it to a square first.

Use a mark, not a full logo

A wordmark with a tagline becomes unreadable at 16 pixels. Use a single letter, a symbol or a bold shape with strong contrast. Test it on both white and dark backgrounds.

Prefer transparency for non-square shapes

If your icon is a circle or a custom shape, use a PNG, WebP or SVG with a transparent background. A JPEG has no transparency, so it will keep its white or colored box.

Troubleshooting

  • The Create Favicon button is disabled. No valid file is selected yet. Pick a supported format under 2MB.
  • You see "File is too large." Compress or resize the image so it is under 2MB. A favicon source rarely needs to be bigger than 1024 pixels.
  • The browser still shows the old icon. Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Clear the cache, open the file URL directly, or test in a private window.
  • The icon looks blurry in a tab. Your source is probably too detailed. Simplify it and generate again, or choose a larger ICO size.
  • The preview does not appear. Some browsers cannot preview certain SVG or ICO files. You can still try generating, and the result page will show whether it worked.

Limitations to Know About

This tool creates favicons from an image you upload. It does not fetch the favicon from an existing website, build one from typed text, or design artwork for you. The ICO size menu stops at 64 x 64 pixels, and the source file must be 2MB or smaller. After you install the files, Google decides when to refresh the icon shown in its search results, so changes can take days or weeks to appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small square icon that represents your website in browser tabs, bookmarks and mobile search results. The classic file is favicon.ico, which can hold several sizes in one file, and modern sites also add PNG icons for Apple, Android and Windows.
How do I generate a favicon from an image or SVG?
Upload your PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP, SVG, ICO or TIFF file, choose an icon size, and click Create Favicon. You then download favicon.ico and seven PNG icons. Use a square source image so nothing looks stretched.
What size should a favicon be?
A 32 x 32 pixel ICO, which also includes 16 and 24 pixel images, suits most sites. Google Search Central advises a square image that is a multiple of 48 pixels, so the 48 x 48 and 192 x 192 PNGs from this tool fit that guidance.
How do I add a favicon to my website?
Upload the downloaded files to your site's root directory, then paste the generated link tags into the head section of your pages. Create a site.webmanifest file from the sample JSON for Android. If your files are in a subfolder, update every path.
Why is my new favicon not showing in the browser?
Browsers cache favicons for a long time, so the old icon may keep appearing. Clear your cache, open the favicon URL directly, or test in a private window. Also confirm the file sits at the path in your link tag.
Is this favicon generator free, and is there a file limit?
Yes, the favicon generator is free and needs no sign-in. Each uploaded image can be up to 2MB. It supports PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP, SVG, ICO and TIFF files, and it does not extract icons from existing websites.
