UTM Generator: Free Campaign URL Builder

UTM Generator

Build validated campaign tracking URLs for Google Analytics, with live validation, presets and CSV export.

Quick presets

Presets fill in a conventional source / medium pair. You can edit them afterwards.

The referrer: google, facebook, newsletter

Marketing medium: cpc, email, social, banner

Campaign name: spring_sale, product_launch

Campaign ID (optional, used by GA4 for data import)

Paid keyword (optional)

Differentiates ads / links (optional): logo_link, text_link

A UTM generator adds tracking tags to a web address so Google Analytics can show which campaign, channel and link brought each visitor. Enter your landing page plus three required fields (source, medium and campaign), and this free tool builds a checked campaign URL that you can copy, test or export.

What Are UTM Parameters and UTM Tracking?

UTM tracking means adding short labels, called UTM parameters, to the end of a link so analytics software can tell where each click came from. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, a name from the analytics product that Google later turned into Google Analytics. Visitors still land on the same page, but your reports now know which email, ad or post sent them.

A tagged link looks like example.com/page?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale. Everything after the question mark is a name and value pair, and the pairs are joined with ampersands.

The six UTM tags

  • utm_source (required): the referrer, such as google, facebook or newsletter. This answers the common question "what is utm source".
  • utm_medium (required): the type of channel, such as cpc, email, social or banner.
  • utm_campaign (required): the campaign name, such as spring_sale or product_launch.
  • utm_id (optional): a campaign ID that GA4 can use for data import.
  • utm_term (optional): the paid keyword, such as running+shoes.
  • utm_content (optional): a label that separates links or ads pointing to the same page, such as logo_link and text_link.

How Do You Generate a UTM Link With This Tool?

You generate a UTM link by filling in the form from top to bottom; the result updates as you type.

  1. Paste your landing page into Website URL. If you leave off https://, the tool adds it. A message under the field flags spaces, unsupported protocols and hostnames without a domain ending such as .com.
  2. Optionally click a button under Quick presets, such as Google Ads, Newsletter or QR code. It fills in a conventional source and medium pair, and you can edit both afterward.
  3. Complete utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Add utm_id, utm_term or utm_content only when you need them.
  4. Set your options: Force lowercase, Replace existing UTM parameters in the URL and Spaces become (underscore, dash, %20 or plus).
  5. Review the Generated campaign URL box and the Parameter breakdown table, which lists each parameter with its value as sent.
  6. Click Copy URL, use Test link to confirm the page loads, click Add to list to keep it, or click Clear to start over.

Worked Example: Tagging a Spring Sale Email

Say you are emailing subscribers about a spring sale and want to know which button drives clicks. You type www.example.com/landing-page into Website URL without the protocol, click the Newsletter preset, enter Spring Sale as utm_campaign and Header CTA as utm_content. Force lowercase is on and spaces become underscores.

The tool returns https://www.example.com/landing-page?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_content=header_cta. It added https://, lowercased the capital letters, swapped the spaces for underscores and placed the parameters in a fixed order. In GA4 those visits show up with source newsletter, medium email and campaign spring_sale.

For the footer link in the same email, change only utm_content to footer_link, then click Add to list. You now have two links that compare button performance inside one campaign.

How Do You Read and Act on the Results?

The Generated campaign URL box is your final link, and the Parameter breakdown table is your proofreading view. Check the table first: the Value (as sent) column shows exactly what will reach analytics after lowercase and space rules are applied.

  • Good result: short, lowercase, space-free values that follow one naming pattern, such as google / cpc / spring_sale.
  • Poor result: mixed styles like Facebook, facebook and fb across links. Reports will split them into separate rows. Pick one spelling and reuse it.
  • Red message under the URL field: fix the address. Remove spaces, use http or https and include a full domain.
  • Very long link: shorten the campaign and content values. For social posts or print, run the finished link through a bulk URL shortener.

GA4 groups traffic into default channels partly by medium, so conventional values such as cpc, email and social help sessions land in the channel you expect. An invented medium like promo_blast may end up under Unassigned or another catch-all group.

Who Needs a Campaign URL Builder?

Anyone who sends traffic to a site from a place analytics cannot identify on its own benefits from tagged links. Typical situations include:

  • Email marketers tagging each newsletter issue. Validate your list first with a bulk email validator, then compare campaigns by click quality.
  • Paid media managers separating Bing Ads, LinkedIn and Facebook campaigns. After the campaign runs, plug spend and clicks into an ad metrics calculator to compare CPC and CPA.
  • Social and video teams tracking bio links, pinned comments and video descriptions.
  • Offline marketers using the QR code preset for flyers, packaging or event signs.
  • Agencies building many links in a row, then using Copy all or Export CSV to hand the list to a client.

If your Google Ads account uses auto-tagging, check how it interacts with manual tags before adding UTMs to those ads.

Best Practices, Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Keep naming consistent

Google Analytics treats values as case-sensitive, so Email and email are different. Leave Force lowercase on, write a short naming guide for your team and reuse the same sources and mediums. Choose one Spaces become option and stick with it, because spring_sale and spring-sale count as two campaigns.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not tag links between pages of your own site. An internal UTM link can start a new session and overwrite the original source.
  • Do not put personal details, such as an email address, in any value. Links get shared and stored.
  • Do not reuse one campaign name for unrelated promotions. Use utm_content or utm_id to separate variations instead.
  • Leave Replace existing UTM parameters in the URL checked when you paste a link that already carries old tags. Clear it only when you want to keep them.

When the result looks wrong

  • The result box is empty: one of Website URL, utm_source, utm_medium or utm_campaign is still blank.
  • The URL is rejected: look for spaces, a protocol other than http or https, or a hostname without an ending like .com.
  • Tags vanish after a click: a redirect on your site may strip parameters. Use Test link and check that the address still carries the tags.
  • Your list is gone: saved links last for the current session, so use Export CSV before you close the page.

What Are the Limits of This Tool?

The tool builds and checks links. It does not read your analytics, confirm that a landing page exists or decide which names suit your reports. It accepts only http and https addresses, and anyone who sees a link can read its tags, so keep values neutral.

Build your next tagged link with the form above, then browse more tools in the online calculators and utilities hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UTM tracking and how does a UTM generator help?
UTM tracking adds labels to a link so analytics can see which campaign sent each visitor. This UTM Generator builds those links for you, free and with no sign-in, from a landing page plus source, medium and campaign values.
How do I generate UTM parameters for a link?
Paste your page into Website URL, then fill utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. The tool builds the link instantly. For example, newsletter, email and spring_sale produce a ready-to-copy URL; click Copy URL to use it.
What is utm_source and what should I enter?
The utm_source field names where the traffic comes from, such as google, facebook or newsletter. Use a short lowercase value and reuse it every time, so all clicks from one place appear under a single row in your reports.
Why does the tool force lowercase by default?
Google Analytics treats UTM values as case-sensitive, so Facebook and facebook would appear as separate sources. Force lowercase is checked by default to keep your reports consistent. You can clear the box if you need to keep capitals.
Can I create several UTM links and export them?
Yes. After building a link, click Add to list. Your campaign URLs for the session appear below, and you can use Copy all or Export CSV to take them with you. Export before closing the page.
Why is my UTM link not generating or showing an error?
The link will not generate until Website URL, utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign are filled in. An error under the URL field usually means spaces, a protocol other than http or https, or a hostname missing an ending like .com.
