One keyword per line. Maximum 10 keywords.

A keyword CPC calculator estimates how much advertisers typically pay per click for a search phrase. Enter up to 10 keywords, choose a country, and this free tool returns an estimated CPC in USD, an estimated search volume and a list of similar keywords, so you can compare terms before you plan ads or content.

What Is Keyword CPC?

Keyword CPC is the average amount an advertiser pays each time someone clicks an ad shown for a specific search phrase. The price comes from an ad auction, so it rises when many advertisers want the same phrase and falls when few do.

CPC stands for cost per click. A phrase like "personal injury attorney" is expensive because one customer is worth a lot. A phrase like "how to tie a tie" is cheap because the searcher rarely buys anything. For SEO, CPC works as a rough signal of commercial value: if advertisers pay a lot for a click, the traffic usually converts into money.

How Do You Calculate CPC?

You calculate CPC by dividing the total cost of a campaign by the number of clicks it received. If you spent $200 and got 125 clicks, your CPC is $200 / 125 = $1.60. That formula measures what you actually paid. This page works differently: it gives a forward-looking estimate for a keyword you have not bought yet, so you can judge it before spending anything.

How to Use the Keyword CPC Calculator

You can get results in under a minute by following these steps.

  1. Type your phrases into the Keywords box, one keyword per line. The tool accepts a maximum of 10 keywords.
  2. Open the Country menu and pick the market you care about. It starts on United States, and 16 countries are available, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
  3. Submit the form to run the estimate.
  4. Check the four summary figures at the top: Keywords, Avg CPC, Highest CPC and Total Volume.
  5. Read the Your Keywords table. Each row shows the keyword, its Est. CPC (USD), its Search Volume and how many similar keywords were found.
  6. Open the Similar Keywords section and click a keyword button to expand its related phrases, each with its own estimated CPC and search volume.
  7. Select Export CSV to download every main and similar keyword, with the columns Type, Keyword, CPC (USD) and Search Volume.

Worked Example: Comparing Three Phrases

Say you sell running shoes online and enter two phrases on separate lines: "buy running shoes" and "how to tie running shoes". Leave the country on United States. The figures below are illustrative, but they show the pattern you should expect.

  • "buy running shoes": est. CPC $3.10, search volume 4,200
  • "how to tie running shoes": est. CPC $0.30, search volume 1,300

The summary cards would then show 2 keywords, an Avg CPC of $1.70 (($3.10 + $0.30) / 2), a Highest CPC of $3.10 and a Total Volume of 5,500.

The reading is simple. The buying phrase carries the higher value per click, so it suits a product page or a paid campaign. The how-to phrase is cheap and informational, so it suits a blog post that earns organic traffic and links to your shoes. Switch the country to India and run it again: the same phrases show much lower CPCs, because advertiser spend differs a lot between markets.

How to Read and Act on the Results

Each number in the results answers a different planning question, and the table groups CPC values into three bands so you can scan quickly.

Est. CPCWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Under $1Informational or low-competition phraseTarget with content and organic SEO
$1 to $5Commercial interest, moderate competitionTest with a small ad budget or a landing page
$5 and aboveHigh-value or highly contested topicCheck difficulty before bidding or ranking

Est. CPC (USD)

This is the estimated price of one click in US dollars for the country you selected. Use it to rank your keywords against each other, not to set a final budget. A phrase at $4 is a stronger commercial candidate than one at $0.40, whatever the exact figures turn out to be.

Search Volume

Search volume is an estimate of how often a phrase is searched. Treat it as a size class (hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands) rather than an exact count. High CPC with low volume suggests a valuable niche. High volume with low CPC suggests broad curiosity that rarely turns into sales.

Avg CPC, Highest CPC and Total Volume

Avg CPC is the mean across your submitted keywords, and Highest CPC shows your single most valuable phrase. Because the average mixes everything you entered, keep each batch to one theme, such as one product line, so the number stays meaningful.

Similar Keywords

Each expandable panel lists up to 8 related phrases with their own estimates. Scan them for cheaper long-tail variations of an expensive term. A longer phrase such as "cheap vpn for streaming" often has a lower estimated CPC and a clearer intent than "vpn" alone.

How to Find High CPC Keywords

To find high CPC keywords, start with phrases that show buying intent and belong to industries where one customer is worth a lot. Insurance, legal services, loans, web hosting, software subscriptions and VPNs are classic examples. Words such as buy, price, quote, service, near me and software also tend to push CPC up, while how, what, free and guide tend to push it down.

A practical workflow: enter 10 seed phrases, sort them by eye using the CPC column, then open the similar keywords for the top three. Export the CSV and keep phrases that combine a decent CPC with realistic volume. If you need more seed ideas first, run a topic through a keyword suggestion tool or pull real queries with a Google Autocomplete extractor.

Who Should Use a Keyword CPC Estimator?

  • PPC managers who want a quick sense of which ad groups will cost more before building a campaign.
  • SEO specialists who want to put content effort behind phrases that have proven commercial value.
  • Small business owners comparing a handful of service phrases in their own country, for example "emergency plumber" against "plumbing tips".
  • Affiliate and content publishers choosing between articles by the money each visit could realistically earn.
  • Agencies preparing a first estimate for a client in the US, United Kingdom or another supported market.

Best Practices and Common Mistakes

Keep the Wording Natural

Enter keywords the way people type them. "Buy running shoes online" works better than a stuffed string of words, because the estimate reacts to the intent in the wording.

Stay Within 10 Lines

Only the first 10 keywords are processed, and repeated lines are not counted twice. If you have 40 phrases, run them in four themed batches and combine the exports in a spreadsheet.

Match the Country to Your Market

The default is the United States. If you serve customers in Germany or Brazil, change the country, or your estimates will be too high. Never compare a US figure with a figure from another country without noting the difference.

Do Not Treat One Number as a Quote

If the CPC of a phrase looks surprisingly low or high, test a nearby variation and see whether the figure moves. A big jump when you add "price" or "free" tells you how much intent the wording carries.

Combine CPC With Difficulty and Intent

CPC says what a click is worth, not how hard it is to win. Pair it with a keyword difficulty check and an intent classifier before you commit to a page. To widen a promising phrase, try an LSI keyword generator for related terms.

Limitations and Accuracy Notes

The CPC and search volume you see are estimates meant for relative comparison between keywords. They are not exact ad-budget figures. They reflect the wording of each phrase, its apparent popularity and the country you chose, so they will not match your own ad account, which depends on bids, quality, device, time of day and competitors.

Very new, very niche or misspelled phrases can return small volumes and generic CPCs. Estimates are shown in US dollars even for other countries. Before you spend real money, confirm the figures against the keyword planning data inside your own ad platform.
