Do that first: in the admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, and duplicate the live theme. Edit the copy and keep the original untouched so you can roll back.

Before and after editing, copy the affected files into a text comparison tool such as a Diff Checker or Code Diff Tool. A side-by-side view shows exactly which lines changed, which makes it easier to undo one edit and to explain it to a colleague.

Then decide:

Existing markup is correct: leave it alone. Valid, accurate output needs no replacement.

Fields are missing or wrong: find the theme code or app setting responsible and change that.

No markup at all: add one block, either through the Shopify filter or a manual snippet.

Never add a second Product block as a shortcut. Search the files for
ld+json
or
structured_data
to see how the theme handles it today. Filenames differ between themes, so treat any path you read online as a hint, not a rule.

Next open
templates/product.json
. A JSON template lists the sections that make up the product page and their order. It is not a JSON-LD script, and arbitrary Liquid markup does not belong in it. You have two sensible placements:

Inside the referenced product section: add the Liquid to the section file named in
product.json
, or render a dedicated snippet from that section.

From
layout/theme.liquid
: render a dedicated snippet behind a product-page condition, only after confirming nothing else emits the same entity.

Product markup belongs on a purchasable individual product page, or a page covering variants of that product, not indiscriminately on collection pages. Google’s merchant listing documentation requires an Offer for these results, so a Product with no Offer is incomplete for that purpose.

If you want the shortest route, Shopify’s filter can be output like this, but only when it is not already emitted and the live output meets your needs:

<script type="application/ld+json">
  {{ product | structured_data }}
</script>

A manual Product and Offer example in Liquid

The following is a separate, illustrative option for a product that uses only its default variant. Do not paste it alongside the filter above, or you will create the duplicate Product block this guide warns against.

{%- assign current_variant = product.selected_or_first_available_variant -%}
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Product",
  "name": {{ product.title | json }},
  {%- if product.featured_image %}
  "image": {{ product.featured_image | image_url: width: 1200 | json }},
  {%- endif %}
  {%- if product.description != blank %}
  "description": {{ product.description | strip_html | strip_newlines | json }},
  {%- endif %}
  {%- if current_variant.sku != blank %}
  "sku": {{ current_variant.sku | json }},
  {%- endif %}
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "url": {{ shop.url | append: current_variant.url | json }},
    "price": {{ current_variant.price | divide: 100.0 | round: 2 | json }},
    "priceCurrency": {{ localization.country.currency.iso_code | json }},
    "availability": {% if current_variant.available %}"https://schema.org/InStock"{% else %}"https://schema.org/OutOfStock"{% endif %}
  }
}
</script>

What each part does:

The
json
filter escapes quotes and special characters in inserted strings, so you never hand-quote values.

Shopify reports
variant.price
in currency subunits, so the raw value for a 29.00 item is 2900. Dividing by 100 gives a plain number. Do not output the raw integer or a formatted money string with symbols or thousands separators.

Image and SKU are written only when present. Never invent either.

Availability reads the variant’s
available
value, not a guessed inventory count.

Two checks remain. Confirm the image URL in the live source is absolute and starts with
https://
. Confirm the currency matches the price shown on the storefront, especially if you sell in several markets. For a draft to compare against, the Product Schema Generator builds JSON-LD with price, availability, brand and SKU. Ratings and reviews should only be added if they are genuine and visible on the page. This is a template, not live data, so it must be checked against your own pages.

Handling variants without misleading offers

Variants are a separate decision. Shopify’s
product.selected_or_first_available_variant
uses the
variant
URL parameter when one is present. Otherwise it picks an available variant, falling back to the first one. A single Offer built from it therefore changes with the URL, and you must test it at the base URL and at variant URLs against what shoppers actually see.

A single Offer does not describe every differently priced variant. If your variants differ in price, size or colour in ways shoppers care about, Google’s product variants documentation describes ProductGroup, with identifiable variant Products that each carry their own Offer and URL. If you go that way, check that each variant URL preselects the matching image, price, availability and add-to-cart choice. Shopify’s filter can already produce ProductGroup output for products with variants, so check the live source before writing any of this by hand.

Testing one product, then the whole catalogue

Test small first, then widen.

Preview the unpublished theme on one representative product. Compare the visible price, currency, availability and image with the JSON-LD in View Page Source, at both the base URL and a variant URL.

Paste the block into the Structured Data Visualizer to read the nested tree and check for missing required fields, or run it through the Schema Markup Validator for syntax and key properties. Both are basic checks, not a Google verdict.

Use the Spider Simulator to see the title, headings, links and text a crawler reads. It shows crawler-readable page content, so it does not prove your Product markup meets Google’s requirements.

Run Google’s Rich Results Test on the URL and read the reported entities and errors. That tool reports eligibility for supported results, not a guarantee of display.

After publishing, repeat on the live URL, then sample products across templates, prices, markets, variant setups and stock states.

Google recommends Product markup in the initial HTML for merchant listings. Price or availability written by JavaScript after load can be less reliable for Shopping crawls. Recheck after any product, theme or app change.

Troubleshooting wrong, missing or duplicate JSON-LD structured data

Most problems fall into a handful of patterns. Work from the symptom to the check:

Symptom

What to check

No block in live source

Is the edited theme the published one? Remember that Google’s documentation separates required fields from useful optional ones. A valid block can still be eligible without being displayed.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the JSON-LD code go in a Shopify theme?

Put it in the section that renders the product page, or in a dedicated snippet rendered from that section. You can also render a snippet from layout/theme.liquid behind a product-page condition. Do not place it in templates/product.json, which only lists sections.

Should I use the structured_data filter or write the markup by hand?

Check the live source first. If the filter output is already present and accurate, keep it. If you need fields it does not give you, change the responsible code deliberately. Never output both the filter and a manual block for the same product.

How do I test one product versus all products?

Start with one representative product in an unpublished theme preview, at the base URL and a variant URL. After publishing, sample products across templates, prices, markets, variant setups and stock states. There is no single check that covers the whole catalogue.

What should I do when the price or currency in the markup is wrong?

Find which variant the URL selects, confirm the price was converted from currency subunits to a plain number, and compare the currency with the storefront price for that market. Fix the Liquid or app setting that produces the value.

How do I find where duplicate Product blocks come from?

Search the source for every application/ld+json block, then search theme files for structured_data and ld+json. Check installed apps, since they may inject their own markup. Keep one coherent block and disable or remove the others at their source.

Is valid markup enough to get a rich result?

No. Valid markup can make a page eligible, but Google decides whether and how product information appears. Treat testing tools as error finders, not as promises of display, rankings or traffic.

Do I need to add ratings, reviews or shipping details?

Only if they are genuine and appropriate for the page. Required fields differ from useful optional ones, and Google’s merchant listing documentation lists them separately. Marking up details shoppers cannot see goes against structured data guidelines.

Next steps

A sound shopify schema markup implementation guide ends with accurate data, not more code. Audit the live source, back up the theme, change only what is wrong, and make sure the JSON-LD structured data matches the price, currency and availability a shopper sees. Test one product at base and variant URLs, then sample the catalogue, and recheck after theme or app updates. Eligibility is never a promise of display, so judge success by correctness.

Related tools and resources on AllEasySEO:

<ul
