Organization schema markup fills that gap. It is a short block of structured data that states who runs the site, what the official website is, which image represents the brand and which other profiles describe the same organization.

This guide covers what to include, where to place the markup, how to choose a logo file and how to find conflicting duplicates. I also keep the limits clear: according to Google Search Central, the markup can help Google understand and distinguish an organization, but no property is required and it does not guarantee a search feature, a knowledge panel, rankings or traffic.

Table of Contents

What Organization Schema Markup Describes

Which Properties to Include in Organization Structured Data

Where to Place the Markup: Homepage, About Page or Every Page

Choosing and Preparing the Logo File

A Minimal Organization JSON-LD Example

How to Check Your Organization Schema Markup and Remove Duplicates

Frequently asked questions

Next steps

Sources and further reading

What Organization Schema Markup Describes

Structured data is code that labels the content of a page in a vocabulary machines understand. JSON-LD is the format Google recommends when practical. It sits inside a
script
element with the type
application/ld+json
, so visitors never see it. Organization is a type in the Schema.org vocabulary.

Organization schema markup describes the entity behind the site, not an individual page. A title tag and meta description describe one URL. Organization markup says: this is the public name, this is the official website, this is the logo, and these profiles are about the same organization. Google Search Central’s Organization documentation, last updated on September 8, 2026, says the markup can help Google understand and distinguish an organization.

Treat it as a description of facts that already exist on your site. If a detail is not true or not visible elsewhere, do not put it in the markup.

Which Properties to Include in Organization Structured Data

Google states that there are no universally required Organization properties, so start small and accurate. These are the fields most sites need first.

Property

What to put in it

name

The public-facing name people know you by.

url

The organization’s official website address.

logo

A direct URL to the logo image file, or an ImageObject with a valid
url
or
contentUrl
.

sameAs

URLs of profiles or pages about the same organization, such as official social profiles.

contactPoint

An applicable support method with an email and/or telephone. If you are unsure, leave identifiers out.

For
sameAs
, list only profiles you control or officially operate. Google Search Central recommends placing it on the homepage or on one page that describes the organization, such as an About page. Repeating it across thousands of URLs adds maintenance work and more chances for conflicting values.

Put the
script
element in the HTML
head
or
body
. Either location is accepted, so choose whichever your template handles cleanly.

Before you default to generic Organization, check whether a more specific type fits. A business with a physical location may be better described with local business markup, and my guide on auditing local signals such as NAP consistency starts you off on that side. A store has its own considerations too, which I cover in what structured data can and cannot do for a Shopify store.

Whatever you choose, keep the organization’s name, website, contact details, logo and claimed profiles consistent with your About page, contact page and the profiles themselves. This is an accuracy checklist. It does not promise that a search engine will recognize the entity.

Choosing and Preparing the Logo File

The
logo
value must be a direct URL to the image file, not a link to a page that displays it. Google’s September 8, 2026 guidance asks for an image that is at least 112 x 112 pixels, has a crawlable and indexable URL, uses a format supported by Google Images, and looks right against a white background. Check that the file loads publicly in a private browser window, without a login.

Pick the representative square or near-square logo, not a wide banner with taglines.

Export it at a size comfortably above the 112 x 112 minimum. If you use an image resizer, such as AllEasySEO’s Image Resizer, confirm the output dimensions yourself and make sure it does not crop the mark.

Upload it to a stable address and avoid URLs that change with each deployment.

Open the URL directly and confirm it displays only the image.

A favicon is a different asset. The Favicon Generator turns a PNG, JPG, SVG or WebP into a multi-size
favicon.ico
plus Apple and Android icons for browsers and devices. That small icon is not automatically the right file for the Organization
logo
property, and the minimum for the logo should never be confused with favicon sizes. Reference a file in the markup only if that actual image meets the logo guidance. Also note that Google does not guarantee a particular logo display.

A Minimal Organization JSON-LD Example

The example below is illustrative. Every domain, profile and contact value is a placeholder, so replace each one with your own verified details. I left out tax and registration numbers on purpose, because they should appear only when they are real and appropriate.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "@id": "https://www.example.com/#organization",
  "name": "Example Company",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "logo": "https://www.example.com/images/logo-512.png",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-company",
    "https://www.youtube.com/@examplecompany"
  ],
  "contactPoint": {
    "@type": "ContactPoint",
    "contactType": "customer support",
    "email": "support@example.com",
    "telephone": "+1-800-555-0100"
  }
}
</script>

The
@id
is a stable identifier for the entity. Reusing it consistently can make references to the same organization easier to manage, but it does not replace accurate properties.

If you would rather not write JSON by hand, the Schema Markup Generator offers an Organization type. Treat its output as a draft. Compare it with the published page and with Google’s current guidance before you ship it.

How to Check Your Organization Schema Markup and Remove Duplicates

Themes, SEO plugins and page templates often output their own JSON-LD. If two sources describe the same organization with different names, logos, URLs or contacts, you have a conflict. Pasting a third block on top makes it worse, so fix the source instead.

Inventory the blocks. Open your homepage and About page in View Page Source, then search the raw HTML for
application/ld+json
and
Organization
. Note every block and where it comes from.

Compare values. Check
name
,
url
,
logo
,
sameAs
and contact details across blocks and against the visible About and contact pages.

Fix at the source. Change the plugin or theme setting, or switch off the redundant output. Keep one authoritative description.

Validate syntax. Paste the code or fetch the URL in the Schema Markup Validator. It lists each block it finds, its type, and errors or warnings, and for Organization it checks that
name
and
url
are present.

Check Google’s view. Use Google’s Rich Results Test and URL Inspection tool to see what Google reads.

There is a limit to keep in mind. View Page Source shows the HTML delivered by the server and may not show markup added later by JavaScript. Google documents that structured data can be generated with JavaScript, so inspect the rendered DOM in your browser and use URL Inspection when your markup is injected on the page.

For nearby head tags, run the page through the Meta Tags Analyzer to review title, description, Open Graph, Twitter Card and canonical tags. That check does not prove your Organization JSON-LD is valid. A validator pass, or the lack of an Organization-specific rich result preview, also does not guarantee any search appearance.

Frequently asked questions

Should organization schema markup be on every page?

No. Google Search Central recommends the homepage or one page that describes the organization, such as an About page. Adding it to every page is unnecessary and creates more places for details to drift out of sync.

Can my favicon be my Organization logo?

Only if the actual image file you reference meets Google’s logo guidance: at least 112 x 112 pixels, crawlable and indexable, a supported format and suitable on white. A small ICO favicon does not automatically qualify, so check the specific file.

Do I need legal identifiers like taxID or vatID?

No. They are optional and apply only to some organizations. Publish one only if it is accurate and appropriate, and match taxID to the address country. If unsure, leave them out.

Will organization markup create a knowledge panel?

There is no guarantee. Google says the markup can help it understand and distinguish an organization, but whether a search feature appears is up to Google.

My plugin already outputs Organization JSON-LD. Should I add my own?

Not before inspecting it. Search the page source for application/ld+json, compare the values with your About page and fix the plugin settings if they are wrong. Add a manual block only after removing the plugin’s version, so two descriptions do not conflict.

What is the difference between name and legalName?

name is the public-facing name people recognize. legalName is the registered name and is useful only when it differs from name. If they are identical, name alone is enough.

Does a clean validator result mean Google will use the markup?

No. A validator confirms syntax and key properties. It cannot show whether Google will display any feature. Use Google’s Rich Results Test and URL Inspection to see Google’s view, and accept that no search appearance is guaranteed.

Next steps

Good organization schema markup is short, accurate and consistent with what visitors can already see. Include the name, URL, logo and verified profiles, add contact details or legal identifiers only when they apply, and place one clean block on the homepage or About page. Then inspect the delivered HTML, remove conflicting output from themes and plugins, and validate what remains. The markup clarifies identity for search engines. It does not promise a knowledge panel, better rankings or more traffic.

Related tools and resources on AllEasySEO:

Schema Markup Generator

Schema Markup Validator

View Page Source

Meta Tags Analyzer

Favicon Generator

Sources and further reading

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/generate-structured-data-with-javascript?hl=en

https://alleasyseo.com/schema-markup-generator

https://alleasyseo.com/favicon-generator

https://alleasyseo.com/schema-markup-validator

A practical guide to Organization structured data: which properties to add, where the JSON-LD belongs, how to prepare a logo file and how to find conflicting duplicates from themes and plugins.

[64
50,78,77,79,18,12
post-173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-technical-seo","tag-json-ld","tag-logo-markup","tag-organization-schema","tag-sameas","tag-structured-data","tag-technical-seo
["GET
